Landmine defused

Troops defused a landmine laid in Ampan about eight kilometers North East of Kodikamam in Jaffna on Wednesday night, a press release issued by the Government Information Department said yesterday.

Twenty kilograms of high explosives were found in this landmine which had been laid some time back, the release added.

A Home Guard who was employed at a road block in Vavunativu, north of Valachchenai had deserted his point of duty on Wednesday around 10.30 in the morning.

The Home Guard had taken away his personal weapon along with four magazines with 120 rounds of T-56 ammunition when he disappeared.

Troops clearing mines had recovered 145 anti personnel mines from the general areas of Alaveddi and Periyavilan in the Jaffna peninsula during the week between January 11 and 18, the release added.
