Road blocks eased in Anuradhapura Anuradhapura Special Sarath Manulawickrama and C.Malawara Arachchi Several road blocks which created numerous problems for the pilgrims visiting the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and other historical Buddhist temples in Anuradhapura were removed by the authorities since last Friday (18). In the past, several unnecessary road blocks were set up by the police officers according to their own ideas and the local and foreign pilgrims who visited the Anuradhapura sacred city had to walk several kilometres to worship "Atamastana" and other shrines. Pilgrims were not allowed to enter the roads from Kurunegala junction, Isurumuni Mawatha and Pokunu Thuna. A considerable number of pilgrims refused to visit Anuradhapura due to this situation. The tourism industry in the Anuradhapura district was also affected due to the low number of visitors. Considering these adverse effects, the Maha Sangha led by Mihintale Rajamaha Viharadhipathi Ven. Namalwewe Rathanasara Thera and Ven. Sarananda Parivenadhipathi Girambe Ananda Thera informed the government about the damages caused by this "unnecessary protection". The Sacred City Committee which met recently decided to remove the above road blocks for light vehicles. However, access roads leading in to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi will remain closed as a security measure. |
