Post-election violence continuing - JVP

The JVP yesterday accused the UNP of continuing with its violence targeting political opponents following its electoral victory.

In a media release JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa MP had cited two incidents where its party members had been victims of violent attacks.

According to the release a JVP activist in Udanagama Baddegama, Ketagoda Gamage Anura had been assaulted by the brother of the opposition leader of the Baddegama Pradeshiya Sabha with the threat that all JVP activities would be wiped out in the area. Following the attack the assailant together with a gang travelling in three wheelers had gone to the home of the brother of Gamage Anura fired into the air and threatened the inmates with death. A complaint in this regard had been lodged with the Baddegama police.

In the other incident in Nivithigala the JVP area organiser for Delwala Priyanjith Vitharana and another party activist Janaka Weerasekera had been brutally assaulted by the gang of UNP thugs. The duo had been staying at the home of Janaka Weerasekera following a party meeting when on the night of the 19th a gang of 15 led by UNP activists of the area saying they were from the Police had stormed into the house and brutally assaulted the JVPers with the warning to cease all JVP activities or run the risk of having their houses burnt. The JVP members who had sustained injuries to the head and face had been warded at the Ratnapura Hospital. A complaint had been lodged at the Nivithigala Police.
