Local polls will be free and fair

Deputy Leader of the UNP Minster Karu Jayasuriya said that the government had already taken steps to ensure that the forthcoming Local Government elections were conducted in a free and fair manner. He said the government would not allow any untoward incident to take place at the polls.

The Minister was speaking at the Rohana Viharaya in Peliyagoda yesterday to donate compensation to victims of election violence in the Gampaha District.

The Minister said stringent action would be taken against perpetrators of such incidents.

He said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had given instructions to the Interior Minister regarding the steps that should be taken to ensure a free and fair election.

Mr. Jayasuriya pointed out that the Constitutional Council due to be set up next week would facilitate this exercise. He added that the Independent Commission on Police Elections, Public Service and the Judiciary would enable state officials to carry out their duties without any interference.

The Minister added that the United National Front regime had taken measures to alleviate the economy and fulfil public aspirations as well.

Minister John Amaratunga was also present at the function.
