Imagined realities

An exhibition of artwork by the students of Elizabeth Moir School will be held at Lionel Wendt Art Gallery February 11, 12 and 13, 2002.

Our art students at the Elizabeth Moir School have been thinking about the connection between art and reality. Neither art, nor literature, nor music ever reproduces 'reality' exactly, but each time we attempt these types of imaginative interpretation we learn something new. Why do we choose to depict the world in a certain way? Why is one artist's interpretation different to another's?

This exhibition promises to excite the senses and challenge the way in which we view reality. The Junior School have been working in 2D and 3D in a variety of media to give us their version of the colours and shapes we see around us everyday. Inspired by the work of British artist Anthony Gormley, the whole school has been involved in producing a 'Field for Sri Lanka', peopled with figures made out of contrasting materials. With children ranging from tiny two year olds to eleven years olds, the art teachers have also presented us with a series of paintings of the same subject by children of different ages. This is especially interesting as it allows us to see the development of a child's method of artistic expression.

The Senior School has also looked at other artists for its inspiration. Andy Warhol has inspired a group project which experiments with colour; we have explored the way in which colour issued and the students have been encouraged to find original ways of seeing. Form 2 have been looking at the association between words and pictures; the comparison of poetry and art centred on the same subject, provides a thought provoking exploration of different modes of expression. We are fortunate to have some excellent artists who will be exhibiting work ranging from delicate pencil portraits to fashion designs, water colour scenes to vibrant cartoons.

With so much emphasis on the written and spoken word in the classroom, it is important to remember that art is another valid means of expression. The Elizabeth Moir School hopes that you will come along to the Lionel Wendt on February 11, 12 and 13 to enjoy the fresh and innovative work that our young artists have produced. Be inspired and entertained with the next generation's view of reality.
