Memorable Rhodes run-out re-lived BRISBANE, Australia, Friday (AFP) - They still talk about it up here in the Queensland capital - that extraordinary dismissal achieved by South African cricket's rubber-limbed Jonty Rhodes a decade ago. Rhodes, then 22, dived full-length with ball in hand at the 'Gabba Ground during the 1992 World Cup to run out Pakistan batting giant Inzamam-ul-Haq, turn a match and give his side victory. "It is remembered not just in Australia and South Africa, but on the sub-continent (India and Pakistan) as well," Rhodes said Friday, as he renewed acquaintance with the ground where the Proteas play New Zealand Saturday and Australia Sunday in vital tri-nations one-day clashes. "Surprisingly, I appear to have quite a following in the sub-continent," he said. "I am not remembered for my batting, because there are not too many outstanding innings," he added modestly. The reality is that he has one century and 23 half-centuries in 208 limited-overs appearances, with an average close to the mid-30s. In 45 matches against Australia, the average is near 40. Recalling the Inzamam dismissal, he said: "He got a long way down the wicket and I really backed myself. "I knew we just had to get them out, but I did not want to chance the throw. "He did get back faster than I thought he would and, in the end, it was a good decision by the umpire. "Over that last metre, I just had to launch myself, rather than throw the ball. That made it a guaranteed hit, which is what we needed." There will be plenty of fans here this weekend who will be hoping for another helping of magic from jack-in-the box Jonty.
