Sports Star Yatawara dies by our Kandy sports special corrospondent J. c. (Hector) Yatawara, one of the finest sportsmen produced by St. Thomas' Matale died under tragic circumstances on Thursday. He was 72-years-old. Hector represented S. Thomas' in cricket and hockey in 1950. He was also a member of the College Cadet Platoon. Hector Yatawara held the post of President of Mawanella Football League from 2000-2001. He was a former Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs and a former Superintendent of the Reserve Police. He also served as Private Secretary to the former Social Service Minister the late Asoka Karunaratne. He is the father of Deshapriya (Major Sri Lanka Army) Kamal, Ayanthi, Priyanthi, Chitragani and father in law of Gamini Jayasundera (Major General Sri Lanka Army), Nimal Dematapitiya (Colonel Sri Lanka Army) and Jayantha Pilapitiya (Staff of Trinity College). His funeral will take place on January 20 (Sunday) at the Mahaiyawa Cemetery at 3 p.m. |
