by Ambalangoda Central special correspondent Deputy Director (Planning) Mrs. K. P. I. Piyadasa of the District Secretariat Galle said the 100 day program of action includes the construction of 180 housing units for the low-income homeless families on the basis of 10 dwelling houses in each of the 18 DS divisions in the district as a measure towards alleviating the misery of homelessness. Construction costs will be subsidized by the government by making a grant of Rs. 50,000 in respect of each house. A plan has been drawn up to improve and develop rural roads. Around 3000 acres of paddy land that had remained totally abandoned in the past owing to poor irrigation will be brought under paddy cultivation again with improved irrigation facilities to achieve increased paddy production in the region. In this regard work on 11 additional irrigation schemes will begin soon. Formal training will be provided for youth to enable them to gain competency in vehicular driving. Training workshop for youth on repairing fishing craft will be conducted. She said apart from this list of priorities which have already gained approval there would be several more projects that would come within the overall scope of the Galle district 100 day program subsequent to confirmation.
