Karapitiya attack shows middle class hatred against workers - NLF

The New Left Front, in a press release issued yesterday condemns the attack on nurses and midwives participating in a Diploma course at the Ruhunu Medical Faculty.

The statement alleges that the attack was conducted by pro-JVP medical students. It also rejected as ridiculous the claim by students that the conduct of the course is a move towards privatisation of education. The NLF says that the real reason behind this attack is the middle class hatred against workers participation in university sponsored courses.

The statement: "The nurses and midwives participating in the Diploma course in Lactation Management (Breast feeding) have been attacked by pro JVP students at Ruhunu Medical Faculty.

In addition, course co-ordinator Dr. Sujeewa Amarasena has been assaulted and his vehicle was smashed with a damage cost of Rs. 200,000.

"This course conducted by the Ruhunu Medical Faculty is heavily subsidized by the WHO.

A nominal fee of Rs. 1,000 is charged from participants to make them participate with a commitment. In this respect this charge is no different to the charges made by the OUSL where students are expected to be employed. "Pro-JVP students have come out against this course claiming it to be a step towards privatisation of education.

This ridiculous claim is rejected by all health sector unions and workers in general.

The real reason behind this monstrous act is the middle class hatred against workers participation in university sponsored courses.

The class antagonism of medicos against nurses and other subordinate workers is exploited by the pro-JVP students to organise this horrible attack against workers participating in the diploma course."
