by Ranil Wijayapala The train services from Colombo to Batticaloa will be resumed in the third week of March with the completion of repairs of the track, General Manager of Railways Priyal de Silva told the Daily News yesterday. He said the Department took steps to run train services on the Batticaloa line up to Welikanda from last Monday after a lapse of several years. Earlier trains operated only to Polonnaruwa. Repairs of the track from Welikanda to Valachchenai is now in progress. A one month deadline has been set, the GMR added. Sleepers and rails needed for this purpose have already been sent and the restoration of the signal system and the railway stations on this line would also be completed soon. He said restoration of the rail track from Valachchenai to Batticaloa will be completed three weeks after the completion of the restoration of rail track upto Valachchenai. The GMR also said that steps will also be taken to restore the track on the Northern line after security clearance. |
