Anura Rohana wins in Bangladesh Anura Rohana, Sri Lanka's No. 1 amateur golfer beat the best amateur golfers in the South Asian region to win the Bangladesh Amateur Championship at the Khurmitola Golf Club in Dhaka last week. He won this title in 2000 also. Anura Rohana had rounds of 75, 68, 71 and 75 for a total of 289 on the Par 72, Khurmitola Course to win by 5 strokes from Javed Khan of Pakistan (294). Indian, Sanjeev Mehra had a total of 295. Sri Lanka's No. 2 golfer, Lalith Kumara lying third after the third day's play putted badly to have a 79 on the final day, pushing him into 5th place. Sri Lanka's other team member, Jehan de Saram finished a creditable 15th. Jehan suffering from a severe bout of influenza and taking antibiotics, battled gamely to play steady golf except for a bad third round. Anura Rohana played immaculate golf especially on the second round when he played 4 under par and on the third round when he had a one under. His excellent temperament, confidence and sharp short game in addition to his accurate approach shots, left his competitors way behind. Anura Rohana is now looking forward confidently to the All India Championship in Calcutta in February. He would be a strong contender for the All India title which elluded him last year when he lost in the final to South Africa's Richard Stern. |
