SLFP maps polls strategy

by Anura Maitipe

The SLFP Central Committee has appointed a sub committee to discuss possibilities of a common strategy with the JVP at the forthcoming Local Government elections, political sources told the Daily News last night.

The Central Committee has empowered other parties in the alliance to decide on the number of candidates they will field. A nomination committee on district basis under the guidance of district leaders and parliament members has been appointed.

It was decided to maintain close association with the JVP and other parties in order to strengthen the voice of the Opposition in and out of parliament, sources said.

The committee has decided to organise a protest rally against political harassment of supporters during and after the previous election. A panel has also been appointed to provide legal assistance for party supporters to bring them justice ,sources said.

The nomination committee will comprise the Chief Opposition Whip Mahinda Rajapakse, the SLFP party secretary, Maithreepala Sirisena, Nimal Siripala de Silva,Mangala Samaraweera, Berty Premalal Dissanaike, and some senior members of the party, the sources said.
