Vallibel Lanka Shipping Ltd, a 100 percent Sri Lankan company plans to launch a feeder service and a passenger vessel service between Chennai and Colombo shortly. The first vessel of the feeder service is expected to be in Colombo on January 14, its Director, Godwin Manobalan said.

"We are also planning to operate a passenger vessel (CAT ship) service between Chennai and Colombo from April. At present, we are in the process of finalising necessities in this regard," he said.

For this purpose, the company plans to purchase a vessel from Japan which has the capacity to transport 450 passengers at a time.

The passenger service, he said will be a convenient method to transport people (to and from Colombo) on business and pilgrimage at a reasonable fee. It will also help systemise cargo transportation between two cities. The company which owns two vessels: MV Induruweli and MV Baduluweli, at present operates a feeder service between Colombo and Jaffna. The MV Induruweli sails to and from Jaffna, carrying bulk cargo. It has completed 20 voyages so far.

MV Baduluweli which is expected to be operated between Colombo and Chennai is a 17-year old vessel which has the capacity to transport 150 containers at a time. The company has also carried out a special order to transport cement to Jaffna from Chennai.

"It was a major breakthrough for the company," Mr. Manobalan said. The company also has business such as computer stationery, hydro power project (10 mv) and has a branch office in India too. The company is owned by and up and coming entrepreneur, Dhammika Perera who is also the chairman of Vallibel Lanka.
