Murali is top Lion for 2001 Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has won the Sri Lankan Lion Ratings for the year 2001 conducted by Cricinfo website with 2544 points. Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya finished second with 2346 points followed by Mahela Jaywardene (2121), and Chaminda Vaas (2113). The top four players finished with over 2000 points each. "Muralitharan just kept on climbing during a record year in which he was the highest wicket taker in Test cricket with 80 victims - a world record for a spinner. He is without doubt the most valuable Lion in the team", says Cricinfo in picking him the winner. The ratings are decided based on the player's performances in Tests and One-day Internationals over a 12 month period. The rating system uses the following points for arriving at the 'score' for every player: 1 point for every run, 20 points for every wicket and 5 points for a dismissal (for fielders). Cricinfo are thinking of expanding their ratings to include other countries as well in order to make comparisons with the Sri Lankan players performances. The final to 10 in the ratings for the year 2001: 1. M. Muralitharan (2544), 2. S. Jayasuriya (2346), 3. M. Jayawardene (2121), 4. C. Vaas (2113), 5. M. Atapattu (1678), 6. R. Arnold (1404), 7. K. Sangakkara (1327), 8. K. Dharmasena (720), 9. D. Fernando (707), 10. H. Tillakaratne (626). |
