MP further remanded

Attanagalla Magistrate Mahinda Samayawardena on Thursday (03) ordered that the Gampaha District PA MP Sarana Gunawardena be further remanded till January 10.

He was in remand in connection with a shooting incident that took place at Bothale in the Mirigama Police Division on December 2, 2001.

Under the Firearms Ordinance, the Police submitted the relevant report to the court regarding the incident. The report revealed that there was a firearm with the suspect.

Anil Obeysekera PC with Attorneys-at-Law Asoka Manthriratna, Tissa Gunawardena, Amitha Dayananda, Jayantha Bandaranayake and S. Thambugala appeared for the accused.

The case was postponed for January 10.

Record paddy harvest

A record paddy harvest has been reaped during the Yala season 2001. The harvest has been recorded as 4.1 Metric Tons per hectare. According to the report of the Department of Census and Statistics this is the highest national level general paddy production achieved so far in our country.

In 1982 the general highest national paddy production was recorded as three tons per hectare. Thereafter, production was stagnant at between over 3 tons and less than 4 tons for the past 20 years. It has risen to 4.1 MTs per hectare for the Yala 2001 season. In the Yala 2001 season, 314,000 hectares were cultivated with paddy reaping a harvest of 1.025 million tons (49.15 million bushels). The highest production had been collected from the Udawalawe, Polonnaruwa, Ampara, Badulla, Mahaveli 'H' Zone and Hambantota districts.

Dengue spread in Kurunegala

Some suburban areas in the Kurunegala District are threatened by the dengue epidemic. Eighty three patients have been detected so far.

The Public Health Office of the District is presently in full gear holding awareness programs, forming of dengue committees, the spraying of insecticides as measures to combat the spread.

Severe headaches, fever and vomiting, appearance of red patches on the skin, bleeding from the nose and gum diseases are the symptoms of this disease. People are advised to seek treatment from the nearest government hospital as soon as such symptoms are detected.

DMO's vehicle set on fire

A vehicle belonging to the DMO Tissamaharama District Hospital has been set on fire by a gang according to Tissamaharama Police.

The DMO Dr. D. D. C. Dissanayaka said that several persons who arrived at his official residence late in the night on December 26 knocked at the door and that he did not open since he was all alone. Then the gang had set fire to his private vehicle and fled.

The staff of the Tissamaharama District Hospital struck work on 27th December protesting against this act.

Ancient Buddha statue unearthed

Two Bodhi Satva statues and one rare ancient Buddha statue have been excavated at Sandagingoda in Tissamaharama which comes under the purview of Tissamaharama Sacred City Conservation Program.

The Buddha statue which is in a standing position is about seven feet in height.

Senerath Liyanagama Archaeological Conservation Officer said that the statue has close resemblance to the Avukana Buddha statue in the Anuradhapura district.
