Millennium city arms haul: investigations continue By Indeewara Thilakarathne A team of fingerprint experts of Cinnamon Garden police have visited the safe house in the Malabe Millennium city from where the cache of arms and a suspected Military Intelligence (MIC) officer and his wife had been arrested yesterday evening. The nearly 10 lakhs worth house bearing the serial number 844 which was one of the houses of the 18 houses earmarked for the Seylan Reward Plus lottery draw had been handed over to Mrs.C.F.N. Jasmina, wife of the suspected Army officer, in March 2001. " A group of army personnel had come in a lorry on Christmas eve and taken residence in the house," said D.C.D. Illangakoon, the security manager of the scheme. But the residents in the neighbourhood say that there were six to seven inmates in the house and one person was in uniform. " They came on the day after the election and there were no women in the group. A police team came yesterday evening at about 4.00 p.m and took them into custody," said a neighbouring woman. The arrest was made on information given by an unidentified person. Daily News learns that the weapons seized have been removed by a CID team investigating the Udatalawinna massacre. Media reports earlier cited Army officials who speculated that the weapons were stored there in an attempt to assassinate Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Four automatic weapons, six claymore bombs, six T- 56 rifles and some magazines were among the items recovered by the Military Police. Military Police are conducting further investigations. |
