DIG complains against false media reports

by Sarath Malalasekera

The Criminal Investigation Department yesterday commenced investigations into the complaint made by Director Personnel and Recruiting Deputy Inspector General of Police Victor Perera that a Sinhala daily and a Weekend English newspaper (not of Lake House Group) had published two reports in Sinhala and in English that he had provided the vehicles and ammunition to a PSD squad to go to Hanguranketha to assassinate Minister S. B. Dissanayake.

DIG Victor Perera also had mentioned in his statement that a private TV Channel had telecast a similar statement.

DIG Perera in his statement has stated that he took over the Post of Director Personnel with effect from March 1, 2000. Earlier he was attached to the PSD. He was seriously injured by the bomb blast near the Town Hall on December 18, 1999 and was under medical treatment for about three months.

DIG Perera had totally denied the allegations made in the newspapers and on the TV channel. He had no involvement whatsoever in providing any vehicles or amunition to the PSD squad which was allegedly in Hanguranketha.

'My family including me, my wife and my school going children have suffered severe mental distress and a sense of fear due to the false and malicious reports published by the two newspapers and private TV channel involving me a Senior Officer in the Police Service. I fear threats to our lives by people who have been provoked by these malicious reports,' the DIG had stated in his statment to the CID.

He had stated that he had already received threatening telephone calls and had lodged a complaint about them to Police Headquarters on December 31.

DIG Victor Perera has requested the CID to conduct a full inquiry into these irresponsible reports which had caused him discredit and mental distress and take legal action against those reponsible for such reports.

The DIG said he had also complained to the Minister of Mass Communication regarding this matter.
