Shutters up at Kataragama LG pilgrims rest by Kataragama group correspondent The government loses an income of Rs. 18,000/- a day as a result of non renting of a rooms in the Local Government pilgrims rest in Kataragama, employees told the 'Daily News'. The Local Government pilgrims rest is the only pilgrims rest that belongs to a government department at Kataragama that provides accommodation to the pilgrims at a very low rate. It has three large halls which can accommodate about 500 pilgrims. These halls are rented out for Rs. 10/- per day per pilgrim. In addition to it this pilgrims rest has 50 rooms with their room charges at Rs. 115/-, 230/- and 280/- per day. But all these rooms have been closed for the past two years due to the minor repairs, incurring a heavy loss to the government. The employees say that the management has not taken any steps to repair them. As a result the pilgrims who visit this place are diverted by the management and they have to stay in private guest houses spending at least Rs. 500/- a day. This pilgrim rest has been constructed for the benefit of the pilgrims of the lower income group. Nobody can deprive that right from those pilgrims. So the employees demand an impartial inquiry to be held to find out the malpractices and improve the conditions of this pilgrims rest. |
