The death of Minister Athukorala:Condolence messages

President's condolence message

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a condolence message issued on the death of Transport, Highways and Aviation Minister and UNP Assistant leader Gamini Atukorale said she was grieved to hear of the demise of Mr. Atukorale. Since 1977 Mr. Atukorale had rendered an important service as an MP, a Deputy Minister, and a Minister. In the UNP too he had rendered a great service as its General Secretary and Assistant Leader. The President said while extending her sympathies to Mr. Atukorale's grieving wife, children, relatives and other close associates, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the UNP membership she would wish Mr. Atukorale the bliss of Nibbana.


Anura saddened and shocked

I was deeply saddened and shocked to come to know of the untimely death of Hon. Gamini Atukorale, says Anura Bandaranaike MP in a message of condolence on the death of Minister Atukorale.

The message further says:

"We entered parliament together in 1977 and even though we were political adversaries we remained good friends through periods of great political turmoil.

"He was a politician who had extraordinary energy, hard working and dedication. His demise will be a great lose to the UNP.

"I extend my sympathies to his wife and children, his immediate family and to the Hon. Prime Minister".

Message of condolence

We express our deepest condolence on the death of Gamini Athukorale MP, Deputy Leader of the UNP and Minister of Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation.

The demise of this patriotic politician is a great loss to our country.

He was a person who organised Janabala Meheyuma and protest campaign to protect the democratic freedom of this country.

He was a pioneer of the great victory of the UNF at the recent parliamentary General Elections.

May he attain Nibbana. K. Karunadasa President Sri Lanka Deshapremi Peramuna.

CWC condolence message

Agriculture and Livestock Deputy Minister Muththu Sivalingam, in a message of condolence on the demise of Transport, Highways and Aviation Minister Gamini Atukorale states that he was deeply shocked and sorrowed to hear the passing away of his Minister friend who was one of his long standing companions in the journey of politics.

It states that Minister Atukorale was a popular and firm humanitarian who stuck to his principles untiringly and resolutely.

"He was a great man in the forefront of all activities ignoring racial differences and his demise is a great loss to the nation as a whole. I view it as a matter that will tremendously affect the future of the country. I convey the condolences of Ceylon Workers Congress as well as my own on this sad occasion, "states the message.
