PM's call for new political culture: SLNSS pledges full support

The SLFP oriented Sri Lanka Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya has pledged its full support to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's call to establish a new political culture provided the UNF government is genuine in its endeavour to shed confrontational politics and takes immediate steps to cry halt to post election acts of thuggery and harassment caused to PA activists and supporters.

The sangamaya in a statement issued yesterday said it highly appreciated Mr. Wickremesinghe's call to set up a new political culture but certain incidents which occurred in state institutions recently had created doubts in the minds of workers about the actual working of the government's new concept. The statement added that according to reports a large number of sangamaya membership had been mercilessly assaulted and debarred from entering their workplaces at several institutions. Evidence suggested that members of the UNP Trade Union were behind all these acts. Although the sangamaya had represented matters regarding such incidents to the respective institutions no action had been taken regarding them so far.

If certain people associated with the government act in this manner it will be impossible to implement the new concept suggested by the government. Cases of assault had increased on the eve of the Day of Brotherhood announced by the government and this had only increased people's doubts.

The country really needed a new political culture devoid of confrontation when one contemplated on the 42 murders and acts of assault, robbery and other destruction reported during the election period.

Therefore the sangamaya would request the government to cry immediate halt to all acts of political thuggery if it desired to eliminate confrontation and establish a new political culture based on human values.
