UNF's first Bill next week

The first Bill of the United National Front Government will be presented next Tuesday (08) to introduce amendments to the Local Government Ordinance in view of the forthcoming Local Government elections.

This Bill which will be presented by Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Alick Aluvihare will make two amendments to the existing Ordinance. "Both amendments will reduce the time frame governing the conduct of this election," Minister Prof. Peiris told yesterday's Cabinet briefing.

The first amendment seeks to reduce the interval between the proclamation and nominations day. The present interval remains at 14 and 21 days. "We will propose to reduce this to 7 - 10 days," the Minister added.

The second amendment will reduce the election campaign period between the nomination date and polling day. The present period is between six to eight weeks. "We will shorten this to four - six weeks."

Explaining the objective behind the amendment, Prof. Peiris said long election campaigns bring ill-effects to the country.
