Posse of 'policemen' taken in A gang of thieves who were alleged to have carried out a series of robberies in the guise of policemen were arrested by the Mawathagama Police recently. A number of weapons were in their possession at the time of their arrest, from their hilltop hideout. The gang in the guise of policemen had robbed 15 shops in the Mawathagama police area. Police on receiving a tip off, that the leader and three member gang were hiding in the hills in Mawathagama, scaled the rocky terrain to make the arrest. The gang were in possession of locally made and imported weapons and over 100 live ammunitions. The leader of the gang, had on being questioned that the rifles and ammunition were supplied by army deserters. After questioning the leader, police were able to arrest the rest of gang members who had been terrorising the residents in the Kurunegala-Mawathagama areas for several months. According to police sources those arrested are from Mawathagama, Nikaweratiya and Hataraliyadda areas. Police are investigating how the gang were able to get hold of these weapons. |
