Flung off truck and killed

A man travelling in a truck was thrown off it sustaining serious injuries and died on admission to General Hospital, Matara.

The deceased was Wilapperumage Piyadasa, aged 40, of Godagama, Matara. While the truck was operating from Yatiyana the accident had occurred on the highway near the Divisional Secretariat, Thihagoda, Police said.

Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, General Hospital, Matara held the inquest in this connection.

Dr. L. B. M. Fernando, Judicial Medical Officer, General Hospital, Matara conducted the postmortem examination and certified that death was due to serious head injuries due to a fall from a moving vehicle.

Having considered the medical report and evidence available a verdict of accidental death was returned by the inquirer. He also instructed the Police to arrest the suspect truck driver and produce him in court.

Increase in tourist arrivals

Tourist arrivals in the Southern Province have increased after the change of government according to Tourist Hotel Managers.

Most of the tourists are from Germany, France and Belgium. Although the tourist hotels are not 'full house' for Christmas, there are a sufficient number of tourists in Bentota and Beruwala Tourist Hotels.

Udawalawa sanctuary, Yala sanctuary and Bundala sanctuary are some of the popular tourist attractions in the South.

The 'Bird Island' at Tissamaharama Wewa is also gaining popularity among tourists.

Several General Managers of the leading tourist hotels in Bentota told the "Daily News" that they hope to have a very good "Tourist Season" during the year 2002, under the new UNP government.

Slain by hit and run van

P>A hit and run van killing a person and injuring two others at Seenigama, Hikkaduwa was nabbed by the Meetiyagoda police in Thebuwana.

It was stated at the inquest held by N. Arambawela, Inquirer Into Sudden Deaths, Galle when three persons were riding on a bicycle. At about 11.00 pm a van came fast opposite Seenigama Devol Devale on the Galle Road and knocked them down and drove off in the dark.

A boutique keeper has noted down the particular van number and given it to the police. One person died on admission to the Karapitiya Hospital.

The deceased was Thuyiyahandi Indika Priyantha Silva (30) of Seenigama, a father of two children.

The condition of two other persons is serious, hospital authorities of Karapitya General Hospital say.

The post mortem was held by Dr. D. D. Samarajeeva, Asst. JMO Karapitiya General Hospital, Galle who reported the death has caused heavy injury on the body damaging internal parts of the body and excessive bleeding.

Body found in drain

A body of a youth was found in a drain of Galle road at Pereliya, Malavenna Junction in the Meetiyagoda police division.

The deceased was identified as Yaddehi Supun Chandana (22) of Gammeddagoda, Rathgama.

The Magisterial Inquiry was held by Y. L. Dharmasena, Chief Magistrate, Balapitiya and it was revealed at the inquest the deceased was with a friend the evening prior to the incident.

The post mortem was held by Dr. Rohan Ruwanpura, JMO, Karapitiya General Hospital, Galle who reported the cause of death was severe attack to the head with a blunt weapon.

Accordingly the Meetiyagoda Police has taken Nammuni - Neranjan Mendis of Malavenna, Telwatta on suspicion and produced him before Y. L. Dharmasena, Chief Magistrate Balapitiya who remanded the suspect till 5th January, 2002.

The Meetiyagoda Police conducted inquiries.

Robbers fire at persons blocking escape

Three persons were injured when a gang of robbers fleeing in a motor car after committing a robbery of Rs. 60,000 from the Bandaragama Pradeshiya Sabha fired at them when they blocked the road near Pinkotuwa Junction along the Horana Road to arrest the gang robbers on Monday.

Avoiding the road block the gang fired at the three persons seriously injuring them and fled away.

The injured persons were admitted to the Panadura Base Hospital.

Panadura Police Crime Branch is investigating but no arrest were made.
