by Ranil Wijayapala The Viharamahadevi Park which was taken over by the Urban Development Authority(UDA) in June last year will formally handed over to the Colombo Municipal Council(CMC) today at the Open Aibe Theatre, Colombo Mayor Omar Kamil told the Daily News yesterday. The Mayor said unlike the UDA the CMC will have cordial relationship with the UDA when improving the park for the betterment of the general public after the taking over of the park. An expanded programme will be launched to develop the park for the benefit of the public attending the park to spend their leisure time, the Mayor added. He said the CMC will give priority in improving the children's park and funds will be allocated on priority basis for this project. The Mayor said a meeting was due to be held last evening between the CMC officials and the UDA officials regarding the staff affiliated to park. The UDA in a special gazette notification vested the Viharamahadevi park in June last year amidst mounting protest by the CMC authorities. |
