Dengue spreads to EP

by Anura Maitipe

Dengue fever has spread to the Eastern province. Over 22 patients have been reported from Kalmunai and Batticaloa area and one patient has died. Another 72 patients had been reported from Kandy a few weeks ago, Health Ministry sources said.

Since October, over 112 patients have been reported from different parts of the country and 4 of them have died while others have fully recovered. The Doctors warned the people to take treatment without delay if they suffer from fever, headache and vomitting which are early signs of dengue fever.

The anti-malaria campaign has deployed a special team to combat the dengue mosquito menace in these areas.Since the wet weather is quite favourable for mosquito breeding this killer decease has once again raised its head, sources said

The same sources also added that public support is also vital in eradicating the mosquito menace. The public should keep the surroundings of their houses clean by destroying coconut shells, empty tins, used tyres, flower pots and filling neglected wells and water ponds etc, to prevent breeding of mosquitoes.
