Abandoned gem mines reclaimed

Environment and Renewable Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha instructed National Gem and Jewellery Authority Chairman Prasad Galhena to take urgent measures to reclaim the abandoned open pit gem mines in Balangoda.

It was found that over 50 open pit used gem mines have been abandoned in this area for over 15 years, posing a danger to the environment and health of the residents living close by.

With the ground water accumulation during the rainy seasons, these open pit mines have contributed to the spread of dengue.

There is also a danger of children and animals falling into them.

Paying attention to this situation, the minister had instructed to commence reclamation of these mines.

Accordingly, the first phase of reclamation of these abandoned gem mines commenced last Thursday in Balangoda. NGJA Chairman Prasad Galhena participated in this event.
