CTB harnesses raids

The Ceylon Transport Board has earned Rs.1,925,918 in the form of fines by raids by the flying squad of the CTB.

The flying squad also detected misconducts and malpractices of bus conductors, a spokesman for the flying squad said.

Electric fence needed soon

The people of the Mahaweli villages of Kajuwaththa, Kekuluvela and Maldeniya in the Dimbulagala Divisional Secretariat areas urge the Wildlife Conservation Department to build the proposed electric fence from Kandegama to Welikanda soon.

They said elephants are straying into their crop fields and gardens threatening their lives.


Toddy tapper falls from tree

A toddy tapper fell from a kithul palm. M Jayasundara, 55, of Gongolla off Meegahakivula, fell from a kithul palm while he was processing a kithul blossom to tap toddy.

He was admitted to Meegahakivula hospital and transferred to Badulla base hospital.


Boy drowns

A school boy of Sivananda Vidyalaya, Kallady drowned in the sea when a group of six students went for a swim at Kallady beach. Jeyanathan Dineshkanth, 16, went to save one of his classmates who got into difficulty in the sea. He could not make it to the shore after saving the friend because of high waves on Monday.


People yet to get kerosene allotment

One thousand five hundred families in Ambalantota and Angunakolapelessa Divisional Secretariat areas cannot obtain kerosene oil although the government has issued a quota of Rs.1,000 worth of kerosene per month for the lower income group families. A spokesman for the MPCS said the MPCS has not received money for the issue of kerosene. Kerosene oil is assumed to be provided for these people from the Hungama filling station.


Regional workshop on NORM

A regional workshop on Occupational Radiation Protection in the Mining and processing of Ores will be held at the Hotel Galadari from February 5 to 8. It is organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in cooperation with the government through the Atomic Energy Authority (AEA).

The workshop is held to provide guidance on issues relevant to radiation protection of workers and the public involved in mining, processing and disposal of raw material containing Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) and to enhance the participant’s awareness about the protection and safety requirements of the International Basic Safety Standards (BSS) in occupational exposure with particular focus on mining and processing of ores.

The workshop also aims to share the experiences and best practices in the mining sector in enhancing radiation protection of workers and also to provide guidance on the application of graded system of regulatory control in the mining and processing of material containing NORM. The workshop will consist of a series of lectures, information exchange among participants, group discussions, demonstrations and technical visits.

Participants from countries in the Asia Pacific region such as India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan etc are expected to attend the workshop.

A blood donation campaign organised by the Chartered Accountants Student’s Society will be held today from 8.30 am to 3 pm at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, Malalasekera Mawatha, Torrington, Colombo 7. The General Meeting of the Past Pupils Association of Hamza Muslim MV will be held on February 3 at 9.30 am at the school.
