MEP against changing national anthem
The Central Committee of the MEP which met on January 29, unanimously
adopted a resolution calling upon President Mahinda Rajapaksa to prevent
any attempt by interested parties to alter the national anthem of Sri
Lanka.
A press release issued by MEP General Secretary Karunatilleke
Dissanayake said the party Central Committee vehemently criticised
suggestions to alter the national anthem as a sinister attempt made by
conspirators depending on the dollars of NGOs and extremist Tamil
organisations.
It requested them to show any country which has included more than
one language in its national anthem.
"The national anthem of the country could not be changed according to
the whims and fancies of any individual or a single section. It should
be done according to the constitution by getting such proposal approved
in Parliament with a two thirds majority and by the people at a
referendum." |
