Farewell to Sanjeewa Hulangama

The sudden demise of city father Sanjeewa Hulangamuwa, a person of much thinking and a great loss to his family and in particular to the residents of Bahirawakanda to whom he served well for over two decades, a great friend to the Kandy youth. Sanjeewa was a multifaceted character with an abundance sportsmanship qualities and a willing helpe anyone who went to him, a great social worker mainly to the have not's. At the time of his demise he was the Chairman of the Kandy Municipal Council Sports Committee, earlier he was President of the Kandy Rotary Club. Sanjeewa served under my Chairmanship in the first ever Sports Committee of the Kandy Municipal Council. Both of us, together with the rest, encouraged and promoted all sports in the city. In 2003 he served as a member of the Kandy Sports Club Committee and the Singer Sri Lankan Airlines Sevens (International) organizing committee. He was a long sanding member of the SLFP.

Sanjeewa was prepared to stand up for what was right even though it meant he had to make a personal scarifies. I knew Sanjeewa Hulangamuwa for well over 50 years. Both of us were living close to each other down D.S. Senanayake Veediya and we as schoolboys played soft ball cricket, football, rugger and hockey together, our playing field was Old Matale Road and Trinity junior grounds. He was also a school mate of mine at St. Sylvester's College and in his last two years of education he crossed over to Trinity College. During his youth he served as an executive of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation as an agent, during this period he was responsible giving the proper advices to those who were laments in this field and many innocent people benefited from his guidance.

He was never tired of speaking to people and never took into consideration any differences of ethnic and sub ethnic relevance. He was looked upon by all fellow citizens as a good human beings worthy of respect. He was always ready to help anyone and took care and trouble to discuss personal problems with him. He was in every way fit to be a friend. Though the years, we considered him to be immortal so, when he died suddenly we were totally shocked and deeply saddened. May he attain Nirvana ! His funeral will take place on Monday, January 21 afternoon at the General Cemetery Mahiyawa.Good Bye Sanjeewa
