'Upgrade Puttalam VC to Municipal Council'

Puttalam Urban Council adopted a resolution to upgrade the Urban Council to a Municipal Council at its monthly meeting of November.

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Member of Puttalam Urban Council, M T M Ameen, told the Council that for more than two centuries this Local Authority has remained in the status of an Urban Council, despite the fact that many Urban Councils, even Pradeshiya Sabhas too have been upgraded to Municipal Councils.

He further pointed out that actions are under way to upgrade the Chilaw and Kuliyapitiya Urban Councils of the North Western Province and when those councils are upgraded Puttalam Urban Council should be the third one in the North Western Province to be upgraded.

Puttalam Urban Council Opposition Leader A O Alikhan said the Puttalam Urban Council is the largest Local Authority and it's time the Council to be upgraded as a Municipal Council. By its size and all other aspects, Puttalam Urban Council deserves the upgrading. He emphasized that Mullipuram and Rathmalyaya, which lie, at present, within the limits of Puttalam Pradeshiya Sabha be included within the new Municipal Council.

Chairman K A Baiz, concluding the proposal told the Council that he has already discussed the matter with the NWP Chief Minister and Local Government and Provincial Council's Minister A L M Athaullah.

As the Urban Councils of Kuliyapitiya and Chilaw have already applied for the upgrading as Municipal Councils. Puttalam Urban Council is the third one to adopt such a proposal for upgrading.
