Driver arrested with cannabis

A driver of the Tanamalwila Divisional Secretariat Office was arrested with 22.44 kilos of cannabis while transporting it in a Divisional Secretariat Office double cab in Hambegamuwa on Sunday. The 48 - year - old suspect, a resident of Sevanagala, was produced before the Wellawaya magistrate yesterday.


Man nabbed with stolen loot

A suspect who robbed gold jewellery worth Rs 1,098,000 from a person in Malabe on July 7, was arrested with a 12 bore locally made shot gun by the Western Province South Special Operations Unit in Thalahena on Friday.

Investigations are continuing.


Man arrested with shot gun

Hakmana Police arrested a suspect with a locally made shot gun and five T56 bullets in Radawela on Sunday. He was produced before the Deyyandara magistrate yesterday.


Missing fisherman's body found

The body of a fisherman who went missing in the sea was found floating by another group of fishermen after three days.

R K Kasun Madusanka of Weerawila drowned after he fell into the sea on October 11 while fishing in a boat.

His body was brought to the Ulla fishing harbour and handed over to Pottuvil Police.


Lightning strikes man

A man's body was found under a tamarind tree in Athupara Yaya Road, Dambulla. He died after being struck by lightning, a post - mortem conducted by the Matale Judicial Medical Officer revealed on Sunday.

P A Chaminda Gunasinghe, 36, was struck by lightning while sheltering from rain, investigations revealed. The Police found his body following a call to 119.


Family hospitalised after food poisoning

Five people from the same family were hospitalised after partaking a meal in Pallepola, Mahawela on Saturday.

Two men aged 61 and 25, and three women aged 80, 50 and 25 years, are receiving treatment at the Matara Hospital.

They fell sick after eating roti and tomato salad. Mahawela Police are investigating.


Three arrested with Buddha statues

Hungama Police arrested three suspects with three Buddha statues at Hathagala junction in Hungama yesterday.

The statues weighed 124 grammes, 310 grammes and 1.316 kilos. They were produced before the Angunakolapelassa magistrate.


Two drown

Two boys, aged six and nine, drowned at Poruthota,Kochchikade. M Nausad Sameed of Kochchikade and M Ramathulla of Beruwala died in the incident. Kochchikade Police are investigating.


Teen drowns

A 13 - year - old girl drowned in Kalioda Oya, Akkaraipattu while she was washing her legs in the canal on her way home after collecting firewood with her mother. A Fathima Hansoor of Oluvil died in the incident.

The body was sent to Akkaraipattu Hospital for the post - mortem.
