Dept to export 50,000mt tons of minor crops

The Export Agriculture Department will export 50,000 metric tons of minor export agricultural crops this year, Director General, Department of Export Agriculture W. D. L. Gunarathne said.

According to him, cinnamon, pepper, coffee, nutmeg, vanilla, citronella, cocoa, arecanut, cardamom, clove and betel are included in these crop categories.

Cinnamon brings the highest foreign exchange to the country.

These crops are cultivated in 14 districts. Cinnamon is mainly grown in the Kalutara, Rathnapura and Badulla districts. Pepper, cocoa, clove, cardamom and nutmeg are cultivated in the Monaragala, Kurunegala, Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy and Matale districts. New cultivation, re-cultivation, production promotion and productivity promotion of quality crops will be the promotional projects.
