“It is the duty of the people to build a friendly atmosphere to enable mental patients to lead a normal life as ordinary citizens without marginalizing them from society,” First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa said.

She was speaking as the chief guest at a ceremony to mark World Mental Health Day organized by the Mulleriyawa Mental Health Science School on Friday.

The First Lady also opened an exhibition of handicrafts and other artistic creations made by inmates of the Mental Hospital. A press release by the Media Coordinating office of the First Lady said this year’s theme of World Mental Health Day was “dispel sorrow from the world”.

The First Lady viewed the exhibits and appreciated the creations presented by the mental patients. She thanked the National Health Science School and the Mental Hospital Director and staff for organizing exhibitions and workshops and added that organizing events of this nature and enabling mental patients to reintegrate into society as normal citizens was a meritorious deed.
