‘Still time for diplomacy with Iran’
US: I believe there is a window of time to solve this
diplomatically but that window is closing.” After having repeatedly
threatened Tehran with the “all options” mantra over its nuclear energy
program, the US president says there is still time to resolve the
Western standoff with Iran through diplomacy.
“I believe there is a window of time to solve this diplomatically but
that window is closing,” Barack Obama told reporters on Sunday.
Obama made the comments after talks with Turkish Prime Minister
Tayyip Erdogan on the eve of a nuclear security summit in Seoul. The US,
Israel and some of their allies have accused Tehran of pursuing military
objectives in its nuclear energy program.
The US and the EU have used this pretext to impose sanctions against
Tehran, while Tel Aviv has issued threats of a military strike against
Iran’s nuclear facilities. Washington has also repeatedly threatened the
Islamic Republic with “all options” on the table. Iran has refuted the
allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA), Tehran is entitled to peaceful use of nuclear technology.
The IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear
facilities, but has never found any evidence indicating that Tehran's
nuclear energy program has been diverted towards nuclear weapons
production.
