Indika Ferdinando's Colombo Colombo which received seven awards
including best play of the year at the National Theatre Festival 2010
and Henry Jayasena's award winning play Kuweni which is to be brought
back to the stage as a new production directed by Samudra Jeewani
Karunananda will be staged on Friday (March 23) and Sunday (March 25)
respectively at the Lionel Wendt theatre, Colombo 7 at 3.30 pm and 7 pm.
Colombo Colombo was the representative of Sri Lanka at the South
asian Women's Theatre Festival 2010 and also at the Kathmandu
International Theatre Festival 2010.
Ferdinando won the best playwright and the best director at the
National Theatre Festival while Anuasuya Subasinghereceived the award
for best performance - female. The play also clinched best music
composition, best choreography and best stage management.
This tragic comic musical play is fast paced, theatrical and bursting
with energyand constantly attempts to tap into the imagination of the
audience to create an exciting theatre experience.
Kuweni has been hailed by critics as well as theatre - goers as a
milestone production which brought a new stylistic trend in theatre.
Kuweni won almost all the awards in the stylized section of the National
Drama Festival in 1963.
The new production is to be premiered under the direction of Samudra
Jeewani Karunananda who is a bright product of the University of
Aesthetic studies. The original music of award winner H.H. Bandara will
be directed in the new production by Gayanath Nalaka Dahanayake. Make up
is by Chaminda Lakmal and the lighting will be by Upali Weerasinghe.
The new production is a joint effort by the University of Aesthetic
studies and Nirmala Prakashana.The chief organizer of the new production
will be Jude Srimal.
Dangaya and Punchi Andare will be staged on Saturday (March 24) at
the Lionel Wendt theatre at 3.30 pm and 6.45 pm. This will be a theatre
experience that can be enjoyed both by children and adults equally. The
objective of the plays is to cultivate a healthy appreciation for drama
among young audiences. The main organizer for the production is Jude
Srimal.
