A quality education must be provided to children or else they will get involved in unwanted activities, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said.

He was speaking at the prize giving of Zahira College, Colombo at the Abdul Gaffoor Hall recently. Principal Mohamed Jiffry read the prize day report.

Minister Gunawardena said the government provides free books and uniform material to students while some schools also provide free meals.

He said that Sri Lanka's Muslim community and education have a very close connection because the world's first woman Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike appointed Dr Badi-ud-din Mahmood as the education minister.

The minister said he will help Zahira College like he helped other schools and appealed to old boys and parents to work for the school's development.

Old Boys Association president and Board of Governors chairman Fowzul Hameed said Zahira College was established in 1892 and former Principals like Dr T B Jayah and Dr A M A Azeez have rendered a tremendous service for the country.

He also said Zahira College has seen a growing demand for admission. Minister Gunawardena and guest of honour and old boy Prof Tuley de Silva handed over prizes to the winners.
