Foreign jobs galore for skilled Lankans

Productivity in the construction sector is essential for the
country's development. It is necessary to have productive equipment and
human resources for the productivity of the construction sector, said
Sri Lanka Open University Civil Engineering Department head Prof M T
Pallewatte.
Participating at a media awareness programme jointly organised by the
Construction Equipment Training Centre (CETRAC) and the Operator
Training College at the CETRAC auditorium last week, Prof Pallewatte
said that CETRAC plays a key role in the construction sector.
Sri Lanka, last year, experienced a rapid growth in the construction
field. The lack of skilled labour is the main problem in the
construction field. There are a large number of employment opportunities
for skilled Sri Lankans in foreign countries. But we do not have enough
workers to meet the demand, he said.
It is important to enhance knowledge in every field to realise main
objectives in the Mahinda Chinthanaya to make Sri Lanka a knowledge
hub, he said. CERTRAC was established by the Japan International
Cooperation Agency (JICA) in 1997 and handed over to the ICTAD
management in 2001.
Since it was established, CETRAC has been maintaining a high
reputation in training school leavers, industry workers and
professionals in the maintenance and management of construction
equipment under the vision to become the hub of training and consultancy
related to the construction equipment plant and machinery in Sri Lanka. |
