'All must get together for Jaffna's overall development'

Jaffna could be further developed and prosperity achieved if everyone in Jaffna gets together, Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said yesterday.

He was speaking after opening a new three - storeyed building of Tellippalai Mahajana Vidyalaya, Jaffna.

The school building was built with donations mediated by the Defence Secretary. Deshamanya K Balendra provided monetary assistance to construct the new building.

The Defence Secretary also thanked the Security Forces personnel for their efforts to develop the Jaffna peninsula within a short period.

Tellippalai Mahajana Vidyalaya of Jaffna has a history of 102 years. The school has 1,553 students and 60 teachers.

The estimated cost for the construction of the three storeyed building was Rs 24 million.

The 5th Engineer Service Regiment of the Sri Lankan Army completed the construction at a cost of Rs 21.9 million and provided labour for the construction.

The new building comprises 16 classrooms, two office rooms, an aesthetic section, two indoor gymnasiums and two fully equipped washrooms.

Clergy representing all religions, Northern Province Governor Major General G A Chandrasiri, Defence Ministry Seva Vanitha Unit chairperson Ioma Rajapaksa, Army Commander Lt Gen Jagath Jayasooriya, Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna Commander Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and Northern Naval Area Commander Rear Admiral Ravi Wijegunaratne were present.
