Japan gives Rs 130m for development projects

The Japanese government granted Rs130 million for two livelihood development projects in Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts implemented by Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) and JEN, a Japanese NGO, under its Japan - NGO cooperation grant scheme.

The first project is titled Livelihood development project in resettlement areas in Trincomalee phase 02 and the other is Support to construct 11 agricultural wells and provide water pumps and agricultural training.

The agreements were signed by Japanese ambassador Nobuhito Hobo, PWJ Head of Mission Aya Sonoda and JEN's Colombo Office Head Etsuko Inomata at the ambassador's residence yesterday.

According to embassy sources, the first project will support to renovate eight minor tanks and provide agricultural promotion equipment and assistance for dairy farmers.

The project will be implemented by PWJ and over 450 families will receive its benefits. The first phase of this project succeeded in strengthening the capacity of individual farmers to increase agricultural and dairy productions.

It will also improve the production capability of a milk processing centre, Sonoda said.

The second project will be implemented by JEN and over 250 families in Batticaloa will benefit.

"JEN has provided emergency and reconstruction assistance for conflicted affected areas across the world. JEN started its operations in Sri Lanka after the tsunami in 2004. JEN has also focused on assisting people affected by the war in the East since 2007 and North since 2009," JEN's Colombo Office Head Inomata said.
