Three treasure hunters arrested

Three treasure hunters, including a conservator of murals attached to
the Cultural Triangle Project, were arrested by the Galewela Police
recently. The suspects were nabbed while digging for a treasure at
Ibbankatuwa, Galewela. Police also took several digging implements and
offerings from their possession. Investigations are continuing.
Funds to build tourist rest

The Haputale Pradeshiya Sabha has allocated Rs one million to build a
tourist rest and a park at Y junction, Diyatalawa to attract tourists,
its chairman N G Samantha said.
World Poetry Day contest

The Cultural Affairs Ministry and Cultural Affairs Department have
drawn up plans to hold an islandwide competition in poetry writing to
mark World Poetry Day, a Cultural Affairs Department Spokesman said.
This competition will be held under open and limited categories.
Schoolchildren from Grade 10 -13 can participate in the limited
competition, while the open competition is open to all Sri Lankans.
Each poet can submit one poem for the competition. Prosody should be
completed in eight lines while Nisades should be limited only to 32
lines.
Creations of schoolchildren should be approved by the principal or
the class teacher of the relevant schools. Creations for the open
competition should be signed by sender of the poem and send to the
Director, Cultural Affairs Department, 8th Floor, Sethsiripaya,
Baththaramulla before February 28.
The Cultural Affairs Ministry will publish all selected and creative
poems to mark World Poetry Day 2012, he said.
Ten injured in accident

Nine policemen and a motorcyclist were injured when a police crew cab
veered off the road and turned turtle at Yaya Handiya, on the Padaviya -
Parakkramapura road on Sunday.
The police vehicle tried to overtake the motor bicycle heading
towards Padawiya when it went out of control. Seven policemen were
admitted to the Padawiya hospital while two who were seriously injured
were transferred to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. A sub inspector
is also among the wounded. Padawiya police are investigating.

Sewage management project

The Haputale Pradeshiya Sabha has received a state allocation of Rs.
4 million for the implementation of a sewage management project in the
Diyatalawa town, said Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman N P Samantha Kumara.
Iguana killers fined

Two men were fined Rs 20,000 each by Matugama chief magistrate
Duminda Weligodapitiya for killing an iguana. Matugama police arrested
the two men on a tip-off while carrying the iguana in a sack.
The suspects are from Matugama.
Boy drowns in Kelani river

An 11 year old Buddhipa Chathuranga of Kirillawala, Kadawatha drowned
in the Kelani river on February 18. He drowned while bathing in the
river on his way to the Sri Pada with a group of pilgrims.
