UNP protest: 15 police officers injured

Fifteen police officers, including three senior police officers, were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital after they sustained injuries during a protest by the UNP at Colombo Fort yesterday evening.

Police Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana told the Daily News that a Senior DIG, DIG and an SSP were among the officers who were admitted to hospital. He also said that the protesters engaged in the protest in the evening in an unruly manner blocking roads.

He added that the protesters attempted to enter the High Security Zone and the Police were forced to use water cannon to control them.

SP Rohana added that the protesters thereafter assaulted the Police.

The Spokesman said the Police then had to use tear gas to control the situation.

SP Rohana said a large number of people were inconvenienced as protesters blocked the roads preventing people from getting to the Fort Railway Station and bus stop.

He added the situation was brought back to normal by around 7.30pm.
