Meelad- un-Nabi celebrations in Galle

The Galle Muslim Cultural Association will host several programmes to mark Prophet Muhammad's birthday (Meelad-un- Nabi). This year's programme began with all island contests in oratory, calligraphy, Quran recitals, Islamic songs, do you know contests and Azan recital.

Talks on the exemplary life and achievements of the Prophet were delivered during the first 11 days of the month of Rabi-ul-Awwal by Muslim scholars at the Galle Fort Meeran Mosque.

The finale will be a public meeting and prize distribution ceremony on February 5 at 4pm at the Galle Fort ramparts.

Islamic Republic of Iran ambassador Dr Mohammed Nabi Hassani Pour will be the chief guest. The guests of honour will be Eravur Pradeshiya Sabha chairman Ali Zahir Moulana, Inthihaadu Ahlisunnathi Wal Jamaa-ath president Alhaj Thaalath Ismail.

Zahira College, Colombo lecturer Moulavi Abdul Haleem will be the guest speaker.


Justice Ministry programmes for Deyata Kirula

The Justice Ministry will conduct several programmes in the Anuradhapura district in line with the Deyata Kirula development exhibition.

A felicitation ceremony for mediators who have served for more than 10 years in the Anuradhapura district will be held. The ceremony will be held under the patronage of Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem and ministry secretary Kamalini de Silva on February 7 at 10am at the CTC Reception hall, Udaya Mawatha, Anuradhapura.

Arrangements have also been made to present awards and certificates to winners of the art, essay and oratorical competition held in line with the Deyata Kirula exhibition in Anuradhapura.

The foundation stone for the circuit magistrate's court building, Nochchiyagama will be held on the same day. The foundation stone for the new court building will be laid at 9am.


Independence Day celebrations

The Independence Day celebrations, organized by the Kalutara AGA's office and the Kalutara District Secretariat will be held at the Kalutara District Secretariat on February 4 at 8.30am.

Among the participants will be Transport Minister Kumara Welgama.

The Prefects Day and Independence day ceremony of JMC International School, Maharagama will be held on February 9 at 8am at the school premises.

Professor Hemantha Kottawatte will deliver the keynote address. Lyceum International Schools managing director J M U Jayasekara will also participate.


Free Islamic musical show

A musical show of Islamic devotional songs by SLBC and SLRC artiste Kalaik Kamal Jamaldeen Mahudhoom will be held at the J R Jayewardene Centre, Colombo 7 on February 7 from 7pm.

It will be held under the patronage of Alhaj M T Ifthikar Ahmed.

This is a special programme conducted for Meelad-un-Nabi.

Kudu Akki nabbed in Dangolle

A woman nicknamed Kudu Akki, said to be the kingpin behind the distribution and sale of heroin in Kandy, and four of her accomplices were arrested in Dangolle by the Kandy division police anti- vice squad officers yesterday.

Police also seized 19 packets of heroin from their possession.

Police said the woman has two other cases pending in the Kandy high court.


Awareness on renal diseases

A renal disease awareness programme will be held at the Oyamaduwa Deyata Kirula - 2012 national exhibition site on the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Around 20,000 kidney patients are being treated at hospitals in the North Central Province. The number of renal patients are on the increase.


PS member cheats girl

A member of the Valigamam South Pradeshiya Sabha was arrested in connection with cheating a girl with promise of marriage and obtaining Rs 300,000 from her.

The man had failed to keep his promise and married another woman. The cheated girl made a complaint to the police. The man was arrested at Point Pedro magistrate's court when he appeared to answer a summons issued by Police.


Young couple arrested

A 20 year old youth who had eloped with a 15 year old school girl attending a popular school in Chilaw and lived with her as husband and wife was arrested with the girl by Chilaw police on Monday.

The arrest was made following a complaint made to police by the girl's parents saying she was missing since January 7.
