Electricity for all in Kalutara by year end -minister

All families in the Kalutara district will be provided with electricity by the end of this year. Steps have already been made to meet 90 percent of the electricity demand in the district, said Transport Minister Kumara Welgama.

The minister was addressing a meeting after he commissioned three new electricity supply schemes costing Rs 22 million in Kalutara district recently. The three electricity schemes are Sirikandura Aluthena, Serupita Dickhena and Matugama Ranwalagala kanda schemes.

Minister Welgama said the three new schemes will benefit nearly 350 family units in the Kalutara district. He said the 'electricity for all' programme launched under the Mahinda Chinthana policies targeted for 2016 could be completed ahead of schedule by the end of this year due to the efficiency of Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.

He said difficult villages in the district which could not be reached by the national grid will be provided with electricity with he help of solar batteries.

Provincial Council member Ven Thebuwana Piyananda Thera also spoke.
