John Keells Tea Market Report:

Good demand for ex-estate teas

Last Week's 1.34 mkgs of ex-estate teas on offer met with good demand. A few good Western High grown BOPs appreciated following quality and special inquiry, whilst in the below best category too prices were dearer by Rs 5 to Rs 10 and more for some invoices.

The plainer teas were mostly firm. Good BOPFs too received improved inquiry with price gains of Rs 10 to Rs 15 being registered. The below best types too were dearer by a similar margin. The plainer teas barely maintained with the poor leaf invoices being difficult of sale. Nuwara Eliya BOPs and BOPFs were of a lower market with Uvas too being Rs 10 to Rs 15 easier.

Best Low grown PF1s were firm to a little lower whilst, others were firm to Rs 5 to Rs 10 easier. High and Medium teas were irregular following quality. Brokens from all elevations tended lower.

There was good support from the tea bag sector and Russia whilst UK, Japan and Continental buyers were selective.

The 3.5 mkgs of Low Growns that came under the hammer this week, met with mixed results. In the leafy category the select best BOP1s/OP1s were fully firm, but all others shed several rupees.

The well made Pekoe1s which advanced sharply in the past few weeks declined as much as Rs 40 to Rs 50. However in the small leaf category FBOP and FBOPF1s and the Tippy varieties met with better demand as the sale progressed.

Western Teas

Select Best BOPs advanced Rs 20 to Rs 30 following special inquiry, other good invoices gained Rs 5 to Rs 10 and more as the sale progressed, Below Best sorts advanced Rs 10 to Rs 15 on average, plainer sorts were irregular. Select Best BOPFs eased Rs 10 to Rs 15, other good invoices were firm to irregular, Below Best sorts advanced Rs 5 to Rs 10, plainer varieties were firm to irregular. Medium BOPs were firm. BOPFs were firm to irregular.

Nuwara Eliya Teas

BOPs declined Rs 10 to Rs 15. BOPFs shed Rs 15 to Rs 20 on average.

Uva Teas

BOPs were firm to easier. BOPFs shed Rs 5 to Rs 10 and more at times. Uda Pussellawa BOPs declined Rs 5 to Rs 10. BOPFs shed Rs 10 to Rs 15 on average.

CTC Teas

Select Best Low grown PF1s declined Rs 20 to Rs 30, others were firm to irregular. BP1s were firm. High and Medium PF1s declined Rs 5 to Rs 10 on average. BP1s were irregular.

Low Growns

Fair demand. Select Best OP1s eased Rs 5 to Rs 10, Best types were irregularly lower by a similar margin, Below Best and poor sorts were barely steady following quality.

Select Best BOP1s appreciated Rs 30 to Rs 40, Best types too gained Rs 10 to Rs 20, clean Below Best types appreciated Rs 5 to Rs 10, others were firm on last levels.

Select Best OP/OPAs declined Rs 20 to Rs 40, Best types too tended lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10, Below Best and poor sorts were barely steady.

Select Best Pekoes shed Rs 10 on average, Bold Pekoe varieties too were lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10, flaky types firm to Rs 3 to Rs 5 dearer at times. Select best Pekoe1s shed Rs 20 to Rs 40, Best types too were lower by a similar margin, Below best and poor sorts were mainly firm.

Fair demand for the tippy small leaf category. Select Best BOP / BOP.SPs sold on last levels whilst the Best and Below Best types gained Rs 5 to Rs 10, poorer varieties advanced Rs 5 to Rs 10.

Select Best and Best FBOPs eased whilst the Below Best were irregularly dearer.

Select Best and Best FBOPF1s gained Rs 10 to Rs 15 and at times more, Below Best and poorer types gained Rs 5 to Rs 10 and at times more.

Select Best and Best Tippy varieties met with good demand, Below Best and poorer types eased Below last levels.

Off Grades

Select Best and Best liquoring Fngs1s were firm to dearer by Rs 5 to Rs 10, whilst the Below Best and poorer sorts appreciated by Rs 10.

Select best and best BMs were lower by Rs 10 to Rs 15 and more at times whilst the Below Best and poorer sorts were firm to dearer by Rs 5.

All BPs were firm to dearer by Rs 5. All Low Grown Fngs appreciated by Rs 15 to Rs 20 and more at times.

Select Best BOP1As sold on last whilst Best and Below Best BOP1A gained Rs 10 on average with fair demand, poorer sorts too were firm on firm levels.

Dust

Select Best Dust1s were firm whilst the Best and Below Best types appreciated Rs 10 to Rs 15 and more at times, poorer sorts declined further. Clean secondaries declined Rs 10 to Rs 15 whilst the others remained firm.

Best Low Grown Dust / Dust1s were firm whilst the Below Best types were irregular, poor sorts appreciated Rs 5 to Rs 10.
