Sri Weerathungaramaya gets Rs 11.4 m shrine room
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday opened a new shrine room at Sri
Weerathungaramaya in Madihe, Matara to coincide with the 2600th Sri
Sambuddhathwa Jayanthiya. Over Rs. 12 million had been spent to
construct the new shrine room at the temple.
The access road to the temple was also developed on President
Rajapaksa�s directive. The President participated in religious
observances after a brief conversation with the temple�s Chief Incumbent
Ven Devalegama Sumanarathana Thera. The dhamma sermon was delivered by
Ven Saputhanthri Kande Sumangala Thera.
Speaking on the occasion on behalf of President Rajapaksa, Secretary
to the President Lalith Weeratunga, said the government in its effort to
create a society with moral values, will provide assistance to religious
places.
He said the President�s presence at the opening ceremony is an honour
to villagers. He said five temples in the village are functioning well.
Weeratunga said that the President starts and ends his day�s by
paying homage to the Buddha at the shrine room at Temple Trees.
The Secretary to the President recollected the era when the Matara
district was underdeveloped.
He said that the government led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa
developed Matara district through various roads and infrastructure
projects.
He said the road network in the district has been fully developed.

Abeywardena, Rehabilitation, Prisons Reforms Minister Chandrasiri
Gajadheera, and Economic Development Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa
