HC judge deplores lawyers' conduct

Judge Deepali
Wijesundera

Colombo High Court judge Deepali Wijesundera vehemently condemned and deplored the conduct of some lawyers inside the hallowed precincts of a court house, where they dashed chairs and created a rumpus in the aftermath of the Court's ruling on the White Flag case last Friday. Describing the conduct as unprecedented in the history of the judiciary in a statement made from the Bench she said anyone dissatisfied with the judgement could always seek redress through the appeal process in a higher court.

The three judge High Court panel who heard the White Flag case found former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka guilty by a majority verdict. The Trial at Bar comprised Deepali Wijesundera, W M J B Warawewa and M Z Razeen. Addressing the lawyers present the High Court Judge said it was the first time such an incident had occurred and if they were not satisfied with the judgement they could go before a higher court. She also cautioned the lawyers to inspect the chairs before taking their seats since these may have been broken.
