Minister Karaliyadda

The minister was selected for this post at the recently concluded summit of male parliamentarians on prevention of violence against women and girls. The summit was held in Thailand with the participation of 15 countries.

Minister Karaliyadda has made the summit members aware of the steps taken by the Sri Lankan government to prevent violence against women and girls. Under this programme, the ongoing project called 'Men too can make a difference - Say No To Violence Against Women' has been highly appreciated by the participants.

The minister said that measures will be taken to minimize consumption of alcohol since a considerable numbers of domestic clashes and violence are reported due to alcoholic influence.

Some people spend a greater amount of their income on alcohol, especially the labourers including estate workers. The Child Development and Women Affairs Ministry will educate estate workers on getting rid of the alcohol habit.

This initiative will be carried out under the theme 'Fullstop to alcohol' in line with the Mathata Thitha programme introduced under a concept of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his Mahinda Chintana, the Vision for the Future.

The minister said the Sri Lankan situation is far better than that of most of the participating countries in the forum.

According to him, most of the participants are keen on implementing the programmes and projects which have been implemented by Sri Lanka to protect women and girls against violence.
