Youngest mayor assumes duties

Sri Lanka�s youngest mayor D.G. Mahinda Kumara assumed office at the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council amid cheers and applause, where Central Provincial Council Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa and a large crowd were present.

UPFA mayor Mahinda Kumara is a leading hotelier and eco-tourism promoter, whose maternal uncle, late Cyril Baapu, himself was a mayor of Nuwara Eliya.

The UNP administered this city for over three decades.

Mayor Mahinda Kumara who is a past pupil of Gamini Central College, Nuwara Eliya, is a keen sportsman who has represented Sri Lanka in Badminton abroad. He possesses a wide knowledge in the promotion of eco-tourism in Sri Lanka.

Mayor Mahinda Kumara called upon everyone interested in the promotion of tourism to extend their support and co-operation in this endeavour. He assured that he would take all possible measures to develop Nuwara Eliya city to the standards of an international city with the co-operation and goodwill of the central government.

Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa called upon the public of Nuwara Eliya to extend their co-operation and assistance to the new mayor and the members to continue the good work done by the former mayor and members. Newly elected members belonging to CWC, the UWF and the CDUA and the UPFA also addressed the gathering.
