Darusman report subterfuge :

Sri Lanka briefs regional representatives

The Sri Lanka delegation to the 18th UN Human Rights Council sessions has held several rounds of talks with several regional representatives to the sessions and briefed them about subtle attempts to illegally sneak in the Darusman panel report to the sessions without formally including it in its agenda said leader of the Sri Lanka delegation, Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe yesterday.

Minister
Mahinda Samarasinghe

He said the regional representatives were told that if such a thing happened it may be a precedent for taking such action against them in the future too.

The minister said these talks were held with delegates of 57 non aligned countries representing the African, Latin American, Asian and Muslim regions.

The Sri Lanka delegation told these representatives that it was unjustifiable to submit the Darusman panel report to the UNHRC sessions when a local commission has been appointed by the Sri Lanka government regarding this report and it has not completed its work. The Sri Lanka delegation also told them that the Darusman report has not still divulged its sources of information and as such there were serious doubts about its contents.

The majority of the representatives present accepted the views of the Sri Lanka delegation and arrived at a consensus as a matter of policy. Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Parliamentarian and Presidential Advisor Sajin Vaas Gunawardena also participated in the discussions.
