Nepali Editor calls on
President |

Youth exchange programme
Indrani THORADENIYA
The Kandy Rotary Club and the American Embassy jointly organized a
youth exchange programme where Tamil youth from the North visited the
South while Sinhalese youth from the South toured the North.
The tour was for one week which included transport, meals and
accommodation.
Tamil visitors were accommodated in Sinhala homes and Sinhalese youth
in Tamil homes.
Commemoration meeting
A ceremony to commemorate the first death anniversary of President�s
Islamic Religious Affairs Coordinator and Ihsaniyyah Arabic College
managing director Dr Niyas Moulavi will be held on July 10 at 4 p.m. at
the Borella Ahadiyya Secretariat, Park Road, Colombo 08. Dr Niyas
Moulavi passed away on July 4, 2010.
The commemoration will be held under the patronage of Buddhist,
Hindu, Christian and Islam religious dignitaries. Family members of Dr
Niyas Moulavi will participate.
Ahadiyya School principal Shibly Hashim will preside.
Hakeem to participate in Law Ministers� meeting
Justice Minister and SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem will participate in the
Commonwealth Law Ministers� meeting representing Sri Lanka, in Sydney,
Australia from July 11 to 14.
Several key issues will be discussed at this meeting, including
international criminal court (ICC) statute and implementation of the
Geneva conventions, human trafficking, victims of crime in the criminal
justice process and strategies to combat corruption etc.
Gangarama tusker dies
Suraj A Bandara
Nawam Raja, the tusker of Gangarama Temple died yesterday following a
stomach ailment. The tusker was in a critical condition after being ill
for over eight days. The 55-year-old tusker was buried at the Gangarama
Temple premises in Hunupitiya yesterday amidst a large gathering, which
included the Maha Sangha and animal lovers.
Sri Lanka China Society AGM
The 29th annual general meeting of the Sri Lanka China Society will
be held on July 21 at 5 pm at the Lions Activity Centre auditorium,
Vidya Mawatha, Colombo 07.
Pulz 2011
Pulz 2011, organized by Ananda College ICT Society in collaboration
with the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka
will be held at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo on July 11 from 9 am to 5pm
Pulz 2011 will also introduce Exalt 2011, a competition never before
witnessed in Sri Lanka. Aiming at exposing students to real-life
situations that they would face when engaged in the field of ICT, Exalt
will be a team-based competition for which students will be short-listed
by an MCQ paper.
English Day, exhibition
Kingston College International (Mutwal branch) will hold the annual
English Day and Science and Commerce Exhibition on July 20 at 8.00 am.
The English Day celebration will be held till 10.00 am.
The exhibition will be open to parents, teachers and students till
4.00 p.m. on the same day.
A souvenir will be published to mark this occasion.
Deduru Oya project to be completed in 2012
Ariyapala WANSATHILAKE- Kurunegala Central special
Work of the first stage of the "Deduru Oya" project will be completed
by March 2012, said project Director W L H M T Bandara at the Kurunegala
Development Coordination Committee at the D S Auditorium recently.
He said about 40 percent of construction has been completed. The
project implemented at a cost of Rs 6,700 million will benefit 15,000
farmer families.
Programme to settle land disputes
The Land and Land Development Ministry has launched a mobile services
programme to remove obstacles faced by the people of the Eastern
Province in settling land disputes.
The first mobile service was held in the Pottuvil Divisional
Secretariat Division recently.
The programme was held under the patronage of Minister Janaka Bandara
Tennakoon.
The Pottuvil Divisional Secretary, the Ampara District Land
Commissioner and officials from the Department of Forest Conservation at
the Land and Land Development Ministry participated.
War heroes to benefit
Nethali STRUYS
The National Insurance Trust Fund (NITF) introduced a new insurance
policy for war heroes to uplift their livelihoods, said NITF Chairman
Senaka Abeygunasekera. It is a joint venture of the War Hero Services
Authority and Pan Asia Bank.
Training for management assistants
Ridma DISSANAYAKE
The Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry will conduct a
training programme for newly recruited management assistants in
collaboration with the Public Services Training Institute.
Over 2,500 management assistants were recruited to the state sector
recently. The training will make them aware of their duties and
responsibilities. Efficiency in the government sector is the main target
of the training.
A group comprising 100 trainees will receive a 10 day training under
this programme. |
